10 Best Practices for Any Recruiting Project
10 Best Practices for Any Recruiting Project 10 Best Practices for Any Recruiting Project Successful recruiting projects are essential to all growing companies, regardless of size orindustry sector. The ability to successfully and repeatedly hire the right talent for the right role will make a hard task (growing a company) a lot easier and a lot more rewarding for everyone. At Hub Recruiting, we have a solid track record of completing successful recruiting projects for many of the countrys fastest-growing technology companies. Recently, we conducted an annual meeting at which we analyzed all of our recruiting projects from the past year. We were able to come up with a list of best practices that were critical to the success of each project. We hope these ten tactics will help you with your own hiringprocess1. Open, Frequent Communication Between Recruiters and Hiring ManagersThis was our most common sign of a successful project. Open and frequentcommunication made it possible to add ress issues and concerns consistently and efficiently. It created a working relationship between recruiters and hiring managers that helped move projects forward.2. Develop a Clear platzset of Hiring Requirements for Each RoleThis includes must-have skills, preferred skills, lists of previously interviewed candidates, do not contact lists, and son. When you have these requirements in place, you can ensure the project runs smoothly and without disconnect between the client and the recruiter.3. Adjust the Team Structure as the Number of Open Roles IncreasesIn the recruiting world, clients are constantly adjusting their roles and needs. Being able to keep up with these changing requirementsmeans your project can sail forward smoothly no matter what.4. Focus on Quality Over QuantityEspecially when a project requires a large talent pool, its important to keep the focus on candidates that meet or exceed your clients expectations. Dont focus on the numbers. It doesnt help anyone if you fil l your pipeline with nothing but mediocre candidates no matter how many there are.5. Talk With Candidates Early and OftenDo not rely exclusively onLinkedIn.Instead, exchange phone numbers or emails addresses to maximize communication. If you invest in the candidate, you will have a better understanding of whether or not they are the right fit for the position and whether or not you may be able to place them in a different role later on.6. Schedule Weekly Status Calls/MeetingsThis gives you the opportunity toaddress issues head-on. It also helps you establish the kind of relationship with your client that will strengthen the project overall.7.Make aya That All Parties Are Equally Invested in the Projects SuccessAlso, be sure to clearly agree on what success actually looks like. If you are not on the same page with your client, you will not be finding the best-fitting candidates for your clients roles.8. Always Share Your Feedback on CandidatesGive detailed and extensive feedback ba ck to the client, especially about how candidates perform during interviews. The hiring criteria can be adjusted and refined throughout the process based on the realities of the candidates in your talent pool.9.Track and Share Candidate PipelineDataThis includes statistics, trends, and unusual characteristics. This level of transparency will keep the project moving forward successfully.10.Invest Time Into Really Understanding the CandidatesThis meanslearning about the candidates goals, decision-making process, life situation, long-term career aspirations, desired compensation levels, and so on.Dont leave these detailsuncovered until later in the process. Get to them early so that you dont end up wasting time on a candidate who only turns out to be a bad fit. While these best practices are largely geared toward third-party recruiters, its important to note that corporate recruiters can also adopt them. Simply approach the company you work for as if it were a client, and youll find tha t each of these tactics will help you just as much as they have helped us.

Stuck in a dead-end job Companies want to recruit people like you
Stuck in a dead-end job Companies want to recruit people like youStuck in a dead-end job Companies want to recruit people like youFeeling unfulfilled and stuck in your dead-end job? While hating your day job may be a deterrent for some recruiters, new reporting from the Wall Street Journal finds that companies are actually seeking out these qualities in recruits. The Journal talked with companies with locations in western New York, Richmond, Virginia, Thornton, Colorado, Miami, Florida and Tulsa, Oklahoma, who were looking at underemployed population demographics before schauplatz up shop in these regions. For example, AvePoint, a software firm, said it looked at 20 midsize cities before settling on Richmond, Virginia, because Richmond had a highly education population where people took jobs that were less than their level of education just to stay.To find underutilized people who are dreaming of better jobs, the companies looked at Labor Department data that keeps track of how many p art-time employees are looking for full-time work. From there, companies see it as a win-win for employers and employees. Employers get to cut costs by moving to cheaper regions with high demands of full-time work, and workers dont have to deal with the costs of moving to expensive cities. The Pew Research Center found that millennials are less likely than ever before to move for jobs, which makes sense since this crop of millennials is also facing unappetizingly low labor market opportunities.Jobs arent cure-all to being fulfilledWaiting for one of these companies to pluck you from your day job is a hopeful thought. But there are other ways to take charge of your own career.Recognize that if youre feeling unfulfilled at work, this feeling of malaise may not change with a new job and title.Feeling adrift at work is a signal for you to reflect on your career, dig deeper, and find the source of this uncertainty.Do you want more autonomy, mentorship, or collaboration? You may be able to find this in your current job, and make the workday more bearable.Talk with your manager about not feeling challenged. The good managers will work with you to improve your workday, because they recognized that unchallenged employees are the ones who quit. Say yes to new projects. As you brush off that resume and network for new opportunities, you can stave off corporate burnout and find creative fulfillment by going on retreats, and taking up side hustles and hobbies.

Robots Tighten Their Grip
Robots Tighten Their Grip Robots Tighten Their Grip Robots Tighten Their GripThe old set-up line, How many robots does it take to screw in a light bulb? has a new answer, thanks to a team of engineers at the University of California, San Diego. The team has created a robotic gripper capable of picking up and manipulating fragile objects. Unlike previous grippers, it can twist objects, sense them, and build models of what it manipulates, enabling it to operate in low light or with poor visibility. The robots embedded tactile sensing can discern an objects shape to complement its other sensing modes.A close-up of the gripper manipulating a 3D printed square. Image University of California San DiegoThe gripper contains three fingers, each consisting of three soft, flexible pneumatic chambers that move when air pressure is applied, enabling the manipulation of objects it holds. Each finger is covered with a skin made from silicone rubber with embedded sensors comprised of conducting carbo n nanotubes. The rubber is rolled up, sealed, and slipped onto the fingers for a skin-like covering. Many other soft robotic grippers exist, but ours is unique because of its exclusive use of soft materials for the fingers, the ability to twist objects, and the sensing layer to both help with control of the hand and to allow modeling of the objects it handles, says Michael T. Tolley, assistant prof and roboticist at the Jacobs School of Engineering who led the engineering team that presented the device at the International Conference on Intelligent Robots in September 2017. The device mimics what happens when someone reaches into their pocket and feels around for their keys.More for You Read about the latest in robotics technologyIn fact, the main goal for the project was to design a soft robot that could achieve complete motions and the integralrechnung of the embedded sensing abilities for feedback control and integration, Tolley says.We chose a three-chambered design because it en abled us to cover a hemispherical workspace, he adds. We went through many iterations on the geometry and the soft material. Sensor integration is a particular challenge, as our sensors must be distributed over the actuators as opposed to the discrete joints of traditional robots, leading to challenges with fabrication, integration, and durability.Testing the gripper on a Fetch Robotics arm, the team was able to demonstrate that device could pick up, manipulate, and model items as varied as light bulbs and screwdrivers. Indeed, one gripper deployed by one robot can apply just enough force and dexterity to tighten and loosen a light bulb.We believe this type of gripper would be useful for agricultural applications such as picking fruit, and for robots capable of direct interaction with humans such as home assistance robots, Tolley says.Neil Cohen is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Sensor integration is a particular challenge, as our sensors must be distributed over the actuators as opposed to the discrete joints of traditional robots.Asst. 4 Reasons Not to Work From Home - The Muse
4 Reasons Not to Work From Home - The Muse4 Reasons Not to Work From HomeIm a big fan of having the option to work from home, and I believe every company should offer this amenity to its employees. Sure, there are some jobs in which this isnt possible- I cant imagine an ER doctor operating out of his living room- but keeping employees locked up in an office building every hour of every day for no good reason just bothers me. With that said, I dont work from my couch all the time. Currently, I average once a week, as I have a weekly meeting thats easier to get to if I spend the day at my apartment. But the truth is, if I didnt have this regular commitment, Id probably work from my apartment even less. I know- some of you who dont have this luxury are probably saying, What? Youre crazy I would stay home as often as possible if I was allowed to But, heres the thing I actually like going into the office, mainly because of these four reasons.1. I Get to See My FriendsIve made some really great friends at my present job, and I truly enjoy spending time with them. When I go into the office, we grab coffee together, celebrate each others birthdays over lunch or happy hour, and even hit up the occasional group fitness class together. Employees report that when they have friends at work, their job is more fun, enjoyable, worthwhile, and satisfying, says Christine Riordan, President of Adelphi University.Theres a special type of bond you can form with your colleagues that you just cant with people outside your company. Because only they really understand the hard work youre doing, the struggles you encounter, and the annoying emails you always get from Dave in the marketing department. Friends at work also form a strong social support network for each other, both personally and professionally, says Riordan. Whether rooting for each other on promotions, consoling each other about mistakes, giving advice, or providing support for personal situations, comradeship at work can boost an employees spirit and provide needed assistance. And, for me, its just a lot easier to benefit from these work friend perks when I see them in person. When I work from home, Im missing out on that face-to-face interaction. And yes, as an ambivert, sometimes that is more than needed. But the truth is, when I decide to hunker down in my apartment for the entire day instead of making the commute, I miss my friends. 2. I Have a Better Desk Set-up at the OfficeI live in a small one-bedroom apartment in the middle of DC. Do you know what that means? It means that when I work from home, Im crammed onto my tiny kitchen table in our dining room (a.k.a., the far right corner of our living room). Hunching over my tiny laptop and trying to maneuver the seven to 10 different documents I usually have open at one time is really not that easy and often proves to be pretty inefficient. While Im pretty certain that I could be much more productive at home if I had a proper work space, I also know that as it stands now, my employer has provided me a better one than Ive provided myself. At the office, I have two monitors to utilize (its amazing what a difference that can make when you have to compare Excel sheet upon Excel sheet), and a desk that moves from sitting to standing. 3. I Can Disconnect mora EasilyWhen I bring my laptop home from the office, the lines begin to blur. A lot. I decided not to have work email on my phone- its not required, and my company doesnt pay for my phone, so why should I? This means that when I leave the office, I actually leave work, instead of checking my email for the entire metro ride home, while exercising, while eating dinner- you get the picture.Removing that feature from my phone made it a heck of a lot easier to disconnect, something thats vital for everyone, from entry-level to CEO. As Alice G. Walton, PhD, a science and health writer for Forbes, says, continuing to communicate with colleagues after hours not only creates stress, b ut it prevents your brain from relaxing and recouping from a long work day in preparation for the next. And its true (for me, at least). Last night when I returned home from grabbing a quick drink with a friend, my laptop was open and staring at me from the table. Though it was almost 8 PM and I said to myself, Abby, you were done three hours ago. You have nothing more to do tonight, the dreaded thing still beckoned me over, silently convincing me that I needed to make sure no top secret emails came through (Ill let you in on a spoiler They never do). And after I checked, I was not only annoyed, but I was then thinking about work. Again. Hadnt I spend enough time thinking about it already?4. Im Much More ActiveBecause I commute via metro, I start my day with a nice 15-minute walk to the station. After a short ride, I walk a couple blocks to my office. I like being an active person, and Im a total nerd about my Fitbit steps. Starting off the day with some movement makes me feel not on ly physically fit, but also mentally healthy. But it doesnt stop there. At work, Im constantly bopping around, whether Im going to the upstairs kitchen to get my daily caffeine fix, moving from breakout room to breakout room, or chasing down one of my colleagues so she can share her snacks with me. Not to mention the walks we go on every so often (usually to buy more snacks). Oh, and, when I head back into the city for the night, I do the whole walking to the metro thing all over again. When Im at home, I spend a lot of time sitting. Yes, Ill get up and have a random dance party every now and then. But basically everything I need to get to in my apartment is less than 20 steps away from where Im currently sitting. And sometimes I try to follow my cat around to increase my step count, but shes sleeping 80% of the time (what a life). Like I said before, being able to choose whether Im at my kitchen table or my desk is one of my favorite perks of my job, and its definitely something Il l look for in any opportunity I apply to in the future. But that doesnt mean I want to spend every waking moment in my apartment. There are just as many benefits of not working from home, and Im glad Im able to have the best of both worlds.

How to Present Yourself Like a Rock Star
How to Present Yourself Like a Rock Star How to Present Yourself Like a Rock Star I am asked all the time why I gave up a lucrative career in entertainment to become a recruiter. The answer is simple I love working with those who can benefit from my years of expertise as an artist development executive.Working on gold and multiplatinum projects at record labels such as Jive, Arista, and Columbia/Sony Music in the 90s was the thrill of a lifetime. Nothing can compete with the memories of breaking new music for Aretha Franklin, Will Smith, Usher, Billy Ocean, A Tribe Called Quest, R. Kelly, and Wu Tang Clan. I viewed working on team projects for Whitney Houston, Notorious B.I.G, Destinys Child, and Mariah Carey as a lifestyle rather than a job.Yes, 20years of working with artists and brands was exciting. However, utilizing the saatkorn artist development and marketing strategies to assist candidates in securing new career opportunities is just as thrilling for me now. Here are a few music-industry insights I often recommend to my candidatesWrite a Song A resume tells your story. Similar to a hit single that includes an intro, verses, choruses, a bridge, and an outro, a resume should be easy to follow. Work experience more than 10years old should not be on your resume unless it reflects the position you are applying for and shows a natural progression.Tastemakers List/Peer-to-Peer Feedback Giving promotional copies of a song to music industry insiders has always aided in creating buzz and exposure. Having a mentor or peer in your circle review your resume is a solid way to gain feedback and may even result in a referral. The It Factor Ever hear someone sing and just know theyve got it? A resume should do the same for a candidate. Research desired positions andtheir requirements before updating your resume. Commonly used terms may have changed since your last search. To get pastfilters, youll need to use the updated terminologies.PackagingA great package catches o nes eye. Candidates should be mindful that it is important to make an impact when contacting hiring managers directly. Include a link to an angeschlossen version ofyour resume, articles, and work samples, as well as information showcasing hobbies and habits,to really capture an employers attention.Press Release/Cover Letter Be prepared to tell the who, what, where, when, and why of your professional career in a concise and engaging manner. I encourage candidates to be bold enough to address directly how their talents and skills will benefit an employer.Marketing the Brand Information on your online professional profiles should reflect what is on your resume. An recent photo should be uploaded as well.Rehearsal Sessions Know what is on your resume. There is nothing worse than speaking with a candidate who cannot remember what was written on their resume. Stumbling when questioned regarding your resume during an interview is a red flag, and the interview will be concerned that your re sume has been falsified.Press Junket Create multiple versions of your resume to highlighting specific talents, skills, and experiences that are relevant to different roles instead of using one general versionfor every job.Im hoping the above has been food for thought and provided you with a few hints as to how to spruce up your resume. Thinking About Working With Your Spouse Consider These Four Things
Thinking About Working With Your Spouse Consider These Four Things We spend so much time discussing work/life balance. The prevailing theory is that, in order to live a happy, healthy life, you need to keep your personal and work lives separate. But some people dont keep their worlds apart. What happens when a married couple decides to take the plunge and departure working together? While probably not preferred in most situations, opportunities for spouses to work togethercan arise. If you and your spouse currently face such a situation, you should be asking yourselves Can we make it work and should we even try?The answer to this critical question depends on a few factors. Here are four things spouses should consider before working together1. Can YourTrust Be an Asset? If you and your spouse are both seeking employment from the same company and/or in the same department, you must firstrecognize that, from HRs perspective, spousal hiring brings with it mo re than a few challenges. It can be seen as bad practice, and not every employer is okay with it. Therefore, it will be up to you and your spouse to argue why you should be the exception. While you may be tempted to downplay your marriage, it could potentially be used to your advantage. Employers look for trustworthiness and loyalty in their employees, and your marriage demonstrates that you and your spouse have these qualities.(This line of argument wont go over well with every employer, so proceed with caution)2. Its Good to Spend Some Time fremdartigIt doesnt matter if youre married, engaged, or just friends It isnt healthy for two people to spend every waking hour together. Normally, work would be a time for you and your spouse to get away from one another for a little bit. If youre working together, youll have to find other ways. For example, you dont have to eat lunch together every day, or even commute together. Its also smart to leave home at home and work at work. Never bring personal issues with your spouse into the office, and dont let job stressors impact your relationship at home.3. Drop the EgoIf one of you holds a higher position than the other, it can cause some jealousy. Any negative feelings associated with asymmetrical roles and/or pay should be addressed. If they arent, they can lead to anger and frustration, eventually damaging the marriage in the long run.4.Branch OutOne of the things employers fear most when considering the possibility of a couple working together is the couples tendency to pair off away from everyone else. This can hurt the company and/or team culture, creating an use versus them dynamic. When working in the same office as your spouse, youll need to make the extra effort to forge strong relationships with other team members. Seek them out for advice and friendship. Doing so will strengthen both your marriage and the company. For some, the idea of working with a spouse is a total no-go.Others, however, are drawn to it. Itis possible to make working with a spouse go smoothly for all involved, provided you take the above issues into consideration.Anna Johansson is the founder and CEO of Johansson Consulting. How to Network When Youre Not Looking for a Job
How to Network When Youre Not Looking for a JobHow to Network When Youre Not Looking for a Job Once youre on the job market, its usually too late to build a network. Of course, you should still make every effort, but networking from a position of need makes it harder to make real connections. If youre already unemployed and looking, anyone you meet will see what they can do for you, but they wont know why knowing you benefits them. Thats understandable, since at that point your only goal in building a network would be to help yourself. In reality, its best to make networking part of what you do at all times. When you have a job, its OK to network with an eye on the next one. In fact, its easier to set up your next position when the people you will be connecting with hear about your long-term interest rather than an immediate need.Even if you have a steady, stable job you like, its important to have an eye on tomorrow. That does not mean youre angling to leave, or are ev en particularly open to a new position - it just means youre banking relationship capital for a future day. This could be a somewhat passive activity where you simply make an effort to attend industry events and meet more people. The best bet, however, is to use the fact that you dont need anything from potential connections to build some new relationships. One great way to do that is to seek out people at companies where you might want to work or in jobs you may want to hold. Introduce yourself, explain your situation and ask for an informational bewerberinterview or even to have a cup of coffee. This tactic also works well if youre considering a potential geography switch. When planning a visit or vacation to an area you may someday want to live in, make a few appointments with potential employers. Let them know your future plans and any connections you may have to the area (family, property ownership, etc.). That way, if a job comes up, you wont be treated as an out-of-town app licant.Networking can take on a lot of forms. You may consider volunteering or working with industry groups on projects that are outside the realm of normal business. Even something like joining a softball team increases the number of people you know. Its also a good idea to raise your profile outside your own company. That could mean speaking at industry events, contributing to trade journals or participating in after-work events .The hardest part of networking on a long-term basis is keeping up connections. That person who had coffee with you two years ago probably wont think of you when a job comes open if that was your only contact.Keeping in touch has gotten easier in the social media era. Make connections on all the leading platforms as appropriate, and interact with your network. Make a point of having a personal interaction a few times a year - anything from getting together to sending a holiday card.Put the effort in to keep your connections from going cold. If you do that then your network will be there either when you need a job, and may even surprise you by putting an opportunity on your plate when you did not expect it.

3 Tips for Staying Motivated at Work
3 Tips for Staying Motivated at Work3 Tips for Staying Motivated at WorkHappy Friday If youre reading this blog, maybe from your current office desk, in between bouts of pen tapping and chair swirling, while attempting to toil away the hours until you can make your mad dash, were here to say we feel your pain Although your attempts at procrastination and undeniable need to watch the clock crawl by may spark commiseration with your fellow workers, your employer probably isnt overly thrilled by your lack of production while on the job. Not only does lack of motivation make for poor performance and corresponding reviews, it can also make your work life nearly unbearable. Looking for help in staying up and active while at the office. Check out our list of three tips for staying motivated at workForget the Word ImpossibleOne of the largest contributing factors to workers stalling or losing productivity is the feeling that a task isnt able to be accomplished. Sure, projects may seem imposs ible or larger than your capabilities at first glance, but that shouldnt be a hindrance to your ability to perform.Instead of looking at how much there is to get done or just how big of an assignment has been laid on your desk, instead focus on what is waiting at the finish line. Whether it be a bonus, a vorrcken or a simple job well done, keeping the positive implications of the task in mind is akin to the glass half full vs half empty anecdote weve all heard mora than once. Dismissing the word impossible from difficult tasks will help your mindset at the outset of any project, making the performance more enjoyable as well as increasing your output and likelihood of successful completion.Keep on Keeping OnOne of the biggest motivation killers in the office is stagnation. Whether it be in your long-term career plans and goals or individual assignments, movement in a forward direction is often the fruchtwein simple and effective way to stay on task. Instead of starting and stopping c onstantly, always strive to be working on your assignment, seeing it through to completion. This concept of constant motion doesnt just apply to performance and projects. Moving forward with your skills and career progression is an equally important aspect of staying motivated at work. Change for the sake of it is never a good idea, but if you find yourself consistently lacking drive or commitment at the office, look at adding skills or taking on additional tasks. Making a lateral move to another department within your current company is also a great way to freshen up your outlook and potentially improve overall productivity.Sometimes Stuff Gets HardThe final piece of advice we have regarding staying motivated at work has to do with the way you personally handle both triumphs and setbacks in your position. While we all anticipate and look forward to successful completion, recognition of efforts and corresponding praise, sometimes even the most skilled employee is going to face failur e.Maybe the budget for your pet project ends up getting slashed or technological limitations make roll out of your dream idea unfeasible. Beating yourself up over these perceived failures or getting down in the dumps when things dont go as planned are massive motivation killers. Successful employees look at problems in their position as hurdles to be overcome or bumps in the road. Resiliency and a good attitude are key skills to addressing these minor setbacks. When faced with failure at work, think of the reasons the task or project went wrong. This can help you avoid repeating the same mistake which can lead to additional frustration. Well-thought-out solutions to seeming problems can often lead to new and innovative approaches. You never know, perhaps that hiccup was actually a benefit in the long term.Staying motivated at the office often comes down to mindset and persistence. Keeping positive in your performance is critical. Staying motivated not only helps you appear as a more beneficial employee, it will also help you enjoy your position making for a more fulfilling and happier work environment.
